Invisalign Hygiene & Cleaning
At Cork City Dentist, we are here to help and guide you throughout your Invisalign Treatment. Good oral hygiene is of utmost importance during Invisalign treatment to ensure the best possible outcome and overall oral health.
Invisalign aligners create a snug fit around your teeth, creating a conducive environment for food particles and plaque to accumulate. If left unattended, these trapped particles can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath.
Proper oral hygiene practices, such as regular brushing, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash, are essential to keep your teeth and gums clean and free from harmful bacteria. Maintaining a diligent oral care routine not only helps prevent cavities and gum issues but also ensures that your Invisalign treatment progresses smoothly and efficiently, achieving your desired smile transformation.
By prioritising good oral hygiene, you can fully embrace the benefits of Invisalign braces and enjoy a confident and healthy smile throughout your treatment journey.
Hygiene & Cleaning
Invisalign cleaning crystals are an effective way to clean and maintain Invisalign aligners. These crystals are specially designed to remove stubborn stains and bacteria that can build up on the aligners over time. Here’s how to use Invisalign cleaning crystals:
- Start by removing the aligners from your mouth and rinsing them under cool water.
- Fill a small bowl or container with lukewarm water- NOT hot.
- Add one packet of Invisalign cleaning crystals to the water.
- Place the aligners in the bowl or container, making sure they are fully submerged.
- Let the aligners soak for 15 minutes.
- After 15 minutes, remove the aligners from the water and rinse them under cool water.
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to brush the aligners, removing any remaining debris gently.
- Rinse the aligners again under cool water and place them back in your mouth.
It is recommended to clean your Invisalign aligners with the cleaning crystals at least once a day to maintain their clarity and prevent discolouration.
Dental Cleaning with Invisalign Attachments
Maintaining good oral hygiene during Invisalign treatment is essential to ensure the best possible results. Invisalign attachments can make dental cleaning a bit more challenging, but with the right tools and techniques, it can be done effectively. Here are some tips for dental cleaning with Invisalign attachments:
- Start by brushing your teeth as you normally would, using a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste.
- Use an interdental brush or floss to clean between the teeth and around the attachments.
- Use a water flosser to clean between the teeth and around the attachments.
- Rinse your mouth with an antiseptic mouthwash to kill bacteria and freshen your breath.
- Use a tongue scraper to remove bacteria and debris from your tongue.
- Use a dental pick or scaler to remove any plaque or tartar build-up around the attachments gently.
It is important to avoid using abrasive toothpaste or a hard-bristled toothbrush when cleaning your teeth and attachments to avoid damaging them.
Most people will use the crystals only once or twice weekly. Retainer Brite™ is another product that will be used the same but is in tablet form. It is recommended to clean your Invisalign aligners regularly using a soft bristle brush. Generally it is felt that toothpaste can be too abrasive for aligners. This has the effect of causing stainable micro scratches on the surface and taking the invisibility out of the Invisalign. There are proprietary products that you can buy to clean aligners that are non-abrasive but equally liquid soap or washing up liquid can be used once the aligners are rinsed thoroughly prior to being replaced
How to Clean Stained Invisalign Trays
Invisalign trays can become stained over time, especially if they are not cleaned regularly. Here’s how to clean stained Invisalign trays:
- Start by removing the aligners from your mouth and rinsing them under cool water.
- Fill a small bowl or container with warm water.
- Add a few drops of dish soap to the water.
- Place the aligners in the bowl or container, making sure they are fully submerged.
- Let the aligners soak for 15 minutes.
- After 15 minutes, remove the aligners from the water and use a soft-bristled toothbrush to brush them, removing any remaining debris gently.
- Rinse the aligners again under cool water.
- For stubborn stains, mix equal parts water and hydrogen peroxide in a small bowl or container.
- Soak the aligners in the hydrogen peroxide solution for 15 minutes.
- After 15 minutes, remove the aligners from the solution and rinse them thoroughly under cool water.
It is important to avoid using hot water when cleaning your Invisalign trays, as it can warp or damage them. Also, avoid using abrasive cleaning products or tools, as they can scratch the surface of the aligners and make them more prone to staining.
